Syosuke Furusato Mura

The Syosuke Furusato Mura park is designed in honor to a famous person, “Shosuke-san of Takemaru,” who loved the beauty of nature and was devoted to his parents.
The park offers various facilities: a learning center called “Moyainoie,” “Shosuke Cha-ya” Japanese restaurant where free-range chicken sukiyaki is served (with reservation), and “Ninjin,” an old-fashioned store selling snacks and tin toys from old days.
Also, various seasonal agricultural experiences such as sweet potato digging and renting of a parcel of farmland are offered here.

Chinkoku-ji (Chinkoku Temple)

Chinkoku Temple is said to be the oldest temple of Shingon Buddhism. This temple is also famous for its beautiful flowers.
Starting around the New Year’s holiday to late April, plums, camellias, and cherries like Somei Yoshino to Gosho Zakura are expected in full bloom.Azaleas, lilies, lotus flowers, and late autumn leaves also reflecting the beauty of the seasons can be enjoyed.

Joko-ji (Joko Temple)

This temple is a branch of Chion-in, principal temple of Jodo Shu in Kyoto.
Its principal image is Amitabha Tathagata; the supporting Goddess of Kannon and the Goddess of Mahsthmaprpta are also enshrined.
A 110-year-old wisteria tree planted in the precincts of the temple by the 31st-head priest Miyoshi of Joko-ji was designated a natural monument of Munakata City.
In May, many people come to enjoy its blooming flowers.

Sakurazutsumi Park

The 2.6-km space between Kagi Bridge in midstream of Tsurikawa River and Akama Bridge is the area designated by the “Sakurazutsumi model project.”
While reinforcing the embankments, about 300 cherry trees and dogwoods were planted. Recently, this area has become a recreation area for citizens.
Cycling roads, trails, and stairways to pocket parks are provided for better and easier access to the river.

Rinsen-ji (Rinsen Temple)

The temple has a stone monument with the only haiku Taneda Santoka sang and inscribed in his lifetime. Santoka seemed to have stayed frequently at this temple.
From early June during the blooming of iris flowers, an iris tea ceremony is held. The temple will be crowded with visitors and people participating in the tea ceremony.

Sosho-ji (Sosho Temple)

This temple was built in 1504 and has the grave of Kobayakawa Takakage, feudal lord of Chikuzen in the Momoyama period.
The temple’s gate was Karametemon (postern gate) relocated from Najima Castle; no nails were used in the gate’s construction.
The temple has an excellent azalea garden called Sosho-ji Teien. About 3,000 azalea shrubs with natural spring water will take your breath away. These azaleas will bloom between late April and early May.
During Golden Week in May, you may enjoy the blooming of Nanjamonja-no-ki, a rare Chinese Fringe tree. In autumn, the temple will be filled with colorful autumn leaves.

Joufuku-ji (Joufuku Temple)

This temple is the family temple of Ujisada, high priest of Munakata Taisha. In mid April, rare blue cherry blossoms can be seen.

Ohshima

Chikuzen Ohshima is the largest island in the prefecture.
A ferry to the island takes 25 minutes from Konominato, The island offers rich nature full of scenic views as well as the Mt. Mitake observation deck. It also features Yume-no-Sayojima island which connects to Oshima when the tide is out.
Also, there are Kengyu Shrine and Orihime Shrine enshrined in a location across Amanogawa River known as the birthplace of Tanabata (star festival) legend.
In August, silk flowers which have different appearances at daylight and night, will bloom.

Jinoshima Island

The island is 15 minutes from Kanezaki by ferry and has a population of around 230.
It is based on a sea urchin fishery and wakame seaweed harvesting thrives. The local wakame seaweed is presented to the imperial family each year.
From January to March, about 6,000 indigenous camellias bring color to the island.
In March, “Jinoshima Tsubaki Matsuri (Jinoshima camellia festival)” is held.

Eco-Park Munakata

Water lilies bloom in the Eco-Park Munakata (Munakata sanitary waste disposal / recycling facility) biotope.
Bright pink, pure white, faint yellow, and rare flowering water lilies (nupharis rhizomas) may be seen.
The best season for viewing is mid-June.
